It is now recognized that skeletal muscle accelerates release of amino acids and uptake by the liver and other visceral tissues and is a characteristic metabolic response to sepsis. Through this mechanism, not only can provide more amino acids for glucose production, more importantly, to maintain the immune function and vital organs necessary for the integrity of the protein. In order to clinically determine the use of amino acids in the liver and other visceral tissues, the concept of Cen-tral fractional clearance rate (CFCR) of amino acids has been developed. The authors study in patients with sepsis showed that CFCR is closely associated with protein degradation, synthesis, and amino acid oxidation measured during in vitro incubation of liver and muscle biopsies. To confirm these experimental results, the authors compared three groups of starved rats (normal, sepsis and mock-operated) liver
