In vitro experiments found that a phosphorothioate oligodeoxynucleotide (25.merPS-oligonucleotide, GEM91) is a potent inhibitor of type I human immunodeficiency virus (HIV.I). Using a variety of different assay systems, it has been demonstrated that GEM91 inhibits HIV-I replication by HIV-I start-stop complementarity with a 25-fold linkage. However, little is known about the pharmacokinetics and metabolic changes of GEM91 in the human body.
