How does cancer happen? For the past half-century many physicians, biologists, and other professionals are pondering this issue. Of course, there is more to this hypothesis. More than one cancer, its cause is not single. In any event, readers of Nature magazine impressed on this issue by comparing the different perspectives of carcinogenesis listed in two valuable dissertations published several weeks ago by our magazine. Three weeks ago (Natuve 1981, Volume 289, pp. 127-130) Epstein and Swartz attempted to disprove the earlier Peto statement (Nature 284, 1980) under the heading “Fallacies of Cancer Survival,” while Peto I once again criticized Epstein's “Opinion on Cancer.”
