在住宅中厨房设计是个细致而复杂的问题。厨房设计得是否合理,首先决定于能否充分发挥内部空间的使用效果。如厨房的用具,零杂繁多,就可以利用壁橱加以分类集中。在一般作饭及洗衣所需的1.7~1.8米高度以上的空间做壁橱。 壁橱的位置可由其服务的范围来确定:放置切、洗用具的,可设在水池上部;放油、盐、酱、醋和剩余食物的,可设在炉灶上部;而放置做面食的用具的(如蒸笼、杆面杖等),则附设在案板的上部,使操作时均能举手而得。
