草履蚧是以卵在树周围的土缝、杂草、枯枝落叶中越冬的。该虫在0℃以上时即可孵化。2月上旬,草履蚧会进入孵化盛期,如遇雨天,则会更加集中地孵化出蛰。草履蚧孵化后,一般会暂先居住在卵囊中。到2月初,伴随着气温的升高,草履蚧就会以若虫的形式出现。2月中下旬至3月的上中旬,草履蚧的成虫开始逐步上树,并会顺着树干爬至树木的嫩枝、幼芽等处,进行刺吸为害。草履的蚧刺吸为害,会造成树木的衰竭,和梢枝的枯萎,甚至是树木的死亡。
