英语和汉语是两种高度发展的语言,因而都拥有大量的习语、谚语。习语和谚语是经过长时间的使用而提炼出来的固定短语或短句,是人民智慧的结晶,习语大都具有鲜明的形象,适宜于用来比喻事物,因而往往带有浓厚的民族色彩和地方色彩。在翻译时我们必须理解习语谚语在英语中所起的作用及文化内涵。下面就英汉两种语言在习语谚语两方面进行一下对比:
English and Chinese are two highly developed languages and therefore have a large number of idioms and sayings. Idioms and proverbs are fixed phrases or short sentences extracted after prolonged use. They are the crystallization of people’s wisdom. Most of idioms have vivid images that are suitable for metaphor of things and therefore often have strong national colors and Local color. In translating, we must understand the role and cultural connotation of idioms in English. The following two English and Chinese idioms in terms of two aspects of comparison:
