Objective To investigate the influence of body mass index (BMI) on prostate cancer detection rate and Gleason score in patients undergoing prostate biopsy. Methods The first 290 patients who underwent transrectal prostatic biopsy were divided into high BMI group (BMI≥25 kg / m ~ 2,143) and normal BMI group (BMI <25 kg / m ~ 2,147). The clinical data of Gleason score, total prostate specific antigen, BMI, age and race were analyzed retrospectively to compare the difference between the detection rate of prostate cancer and the Gleason score. Results Of the 290 prostate biopsy patients, 137 were prostate cancer. The detection rate of prostate cancer in both groups was similar (48.95% vs.45.58%) (P> 0.05). The high Gleason score (≥7 points) in high BMI group was higher than that in normal BMI group (44.76% vs.38.10%) (P <0.05). Conclusions BMI in patients undergoing prostate biopsy has no significant effect on the detection rate of prostate cancer, but BMI is an important factor affecting the Gleason score of prostate biopsy.
