本文选自外研社牛津书虫丛书之一的《化学的秘密》。这是一个关于环保的故事。某油漆工厂长期向附近的河流排放有毒的废水,受雇于该工厂的生物学家约翰发现了这个可怕的事实真相,但为了保住工作而向老板屈服,保持了沉默。约翰的女儿克里斯汀和女婿西蒙更富有正义感,他们支持绿色世界的环保主张,在发现污染的河水使海豹死亡后,他们几个人毅然采取了行动,去堵塞工厂排污的管道,后来不慎落水,幸好有惊无险。下文叙述的就是他们的这段经历。
