Maintenance diagnostics on high-power electric drive diesel locomotives can be simplified by monitoring engine performance using an electronic recorder. The Pulse LPM is a self-contained, sealed box that monitors generator voltage and current, hand position, and resistance braking characteristics. This information is processed to give the locomotive’s continuous power rating. The output value is given by an analog counter in kilowatt hours, showing the accumulated work output value. The digital display can be chosen to show horsepower, current or voltage at any given time. Over a given period of time, the overload indicator trips as soon as the locomotive exceeds its rated limit.
