2000年的新年不是一个普通的新年,这是20世纪最后的一个新年。我们即将走进新世纪,带着人民共和国不断传来的喜讯健步走进新世纪,眼光是远大而明亮的,胸怀是宽广而温暖的。我们12亿中国人将在新世纪做出更大的事业,与世界各国各民族共同为人类的和平与发展做出新的贡献。迎接新世纪的到来,我们要做好两件大事:一是继续做好科教兴国这件“五四”以来尚未完成的大事。二是中共中央于1999年11月发出文件,要求加强和改进思想政治工作,适应新形势的需要。科教兴国的方针任务已经明确。许多专家、学者讲了不少,负责科学与教育的各级干部也讲了不少,现在的问题是怎样努力去做。我从报刊和电视报道上得知的情况有限,但也感到有个问题尚须抓紧抓好,就是普及
The New Year of 2000 is not an ordinary New Year. It is the last New Year of the 20th century. We are about to walk into the new century and walk into the new century with the good news constantly conveyed by the People’s Republic of China. Our vision is ambitious and bright, our mind is broad and warm. We, the 1.2 billion Chinese people, will make greater contributions in the new century and work together with all the nations of the world to make new contributions to the peace and development of mankind. To welcome the advent of the new century, we must do a good job in two major matters. First, we must continue to do a great deal yet to be accomplished since the May 4th Movement of “rejuvenating our country through science and education.” Second, the CPC Central Committee issued a document in November 1999, calling for strengthening and improving ideological and political work to meet the needs of the new situation. The task of rejuvenating the country through science and education has been clearly defined. Many experts and scholars have talked a lot about how cadres at all levels in charge of science and education have talked a lot about how the problems now are going to be solved. What I learned from the press and television coverage is limited, but I also feel that there is a problem that needs to be tackled hard and that is universal
