Methanthiol or methyl-mercaptan (MeSH) in the oceans is the major demethylation product of the algal metabolite dimethylsulfoniopropionate (DMSP). Although the concentration of methanethiol in the ocean is very low (0.3 nM to 28 mM), it is a major source of bacterial protein sulfur in the oceans. This paper presents an overview of the sources and consumption of methanethiol, its role in marine ecosystems, and the methods of determination that will help to understand the biogeochemical cycles of methanethiol in the oceans and their status and role in the ocean sulfur cycle . The future research on methyl mercaptan in the ocean is put forward.
