江南机器制造总局建于1865年6月,系清朝洋务派曾国藩、李鸿章所兴办,是我国近代工业史上一个早期的军工企业。建局之初,租赁虹口一家美商铁厂,而后并入两个小炮局,兼造船炮。开始规模很小,仅二百工匠。不久,虹口被美占为租界,不准中国人设厂制造军火,遂于1867年夏,迁至城南高昌庙镇(江南造船厂现址),圈占民地,营建新厂。
The Jiangnan Machine Manufacturing Administration was established in June 1865. It was established by Zeng Guofan and Li Hongzhang of the Qing government. It is an early military enterprise in the history of China’s modern industry. At the beginning of the establishment, it leased an American Iron Works in Hongkou and later merged into two small guns and built a cannon. The start was small and only two hundred craftsmen. Soon after, Hongkou was occupied by the United States as a concession, the Chinese were not allowed to set up factories to manufacture arms, and in the summer of 1867, they moved to Gaochang Miao Town in the south of the city (current site of the Jiangnan Shipyard), occupies the land and built a new factory.
