[Topic background] “The waters in the south are relatively few in the north. If possible, it is also possible to borrow some water.” This was the concept proposed by Chairman Mao Zedong in 1952 when he visited the Yellow River. Today, Chairman Mao’s “conception” has become a “plan” - the South-to-North Water Transfer Project. This year, this grand plan will be implemented. It is estimated that around 2007, the people of Beijing will be able to drink water from the Yangtze River at their doorstep. In order to give students a more detailed understanding of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project, the reporter recently interviewed Liu Heng, Deputy Dean of the Nanjing Institute of Hydraulic Science and Technology, Ministry of Water Resources.
