梅与菊,是屈大均人生中的不同姿态和心境。前期的梅,寄托着诗人对旧朝的深情缅怀和对复明事业的美好期许,象征着诗人抱独守志的遗民人格;后期的梅,虽也蕴含着诗人人格自赏的意味,但政治色彩明显减弱,生命意识逐渐增强,是诗人对人生苦难的沉痛自省和对于现实生命的美好体验;晚年诗中,菊无霜不开的物理特征,与诗人自甘清苦的人生选择相契合,菊点染秋色的美好情致及可簪、可食、可入药的物性功用,给予诗人最朴素、最亲切的生命关怀。
