The TT virus (TTV) is a newly discovered transfusion-associated DNA virus that causes post-transfusion hepatitis. In Japanese blood donors, the detection rate was 12%. This study was conducted to investigate the prevalence and clinical impact of TTV in bone marrow transplant recipients. Twenty-five BMT recipients collected blood samples 6 to 12 weeks after transplantation and detected the TTV-DNA by semi-nested PCR. TTV-DNA was positive in 15 (60%) of the 25 recipients after transplantation. While only 2 out of 20 donors (10%) were positive.
