Systematically expounds the theory, method and computer program of calculating the hydraulic transient process of hydropower units by the characteristic line method. The eigenvalue equation and rotor equation of motion are derived. The calculation procedure of the characteristic line method and various boundary conditions of hydropower units are introduced, and the calculation examples are given.
