Describes the most appropriate method of evaluating the bioavailability of iron supplements (Fe). After this supplement is labeled with an isotope, monitoring via feces and measuring hemoglobin-bound Fe are the best ways to measure bioavailability. In vitro Caco-2 cells can be used for rapid screening to predict the potential bioavailability of the absorbed material. If this compound can not be labeled, the presence and absence of both oral Fe and concurrent intravenous isotope Fe in plasma can be used to quantify its absorption. Plasma concentrations within 4 to 6 h at oral doses of more than 25 mg provide a qualitative estimate of bioavailability. At the same time, standardization issues that minimize the variation in Fe absorption efficiency between individuals and individuals have also been explored
