1936年2月,郁达夫出任福建省政府参议员。首次从政,他不懂得什么官规,对办公制度亦不似一般科秘主管那么拘谨。他与同事相处,既无官僚架子,又无酸文人妄自尊大之陋习。他为人爽直坦率,且不分上下,一样对待,故人缘极佳,对此,郁达夫本人亦颇为得意。因此,尽管他生活有些落拓不羁,但大家不仅未加非议,反觉其有趣可爱。
