The United States and Japan are the two largest economies in the world, and their gross domestic product accounts for 40% of the world total. Under the circumstances of economic globalization and the rise of China’s economy and its integration into the international economic system, the importance of the economic and trade relations between Japan and the United States has dropped relatively and new changes have taken place in the economic and trade relations between the two countries. The reasons for this change include the stagnation of Japan’s economy in the 1990s and the emergence of China as a trading power that has changed the focus of attention between Japan and the United States. Japan-US economic and trade relations also have some problems. There are bilateral and multilateral channels for handling Japan-US economic and trade relations. However, the establishment of the Japan-US Free Trade Area is the third channel for developing economic and trade relations between the two countries. China should take this possibility into account and respond positively.
