It is generally assumed that Type I pitting may be related to the presence of a carbon film on the copper surface. It is evident from the x-ray powder photography that CuCO 3, Cu (OH) 2, cupricite, Cu (I) chloride, cuprous oxide, and cuprous oxide may be present in the surface film of the annealed copper pipe that is corroded due to Type I pitting Black copper mine. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and ion bombardment have demonstrated that Cu (II) -containing compounds exist only in the outermost layers, whereas the layers consist mainly of cuprous oxide. Although carbon is present, the depletion of the outer layer due to ion bombardment suggests that carbon does not form a complete film but rather spreads throughout the thickness of the oxide film.
