In the past three years or so, I visited Singapore twice and interviewed some heads of industrial departments and many business units. Facts and statistics show that the Singapore, once oppressed and plundered by Britain, Japan, colonialism and imperialism, has undergone a tremendous economic and social change in nearly two decades. It has now become the world’s third largest refining center, the world’s third largest port, the world’s second largest drilling platform manufacturing center. Singapore is not only the trading and financial center of Southeast Asia, but also the world’s four largest financial centers with London, Hong Kong and New York. Between 1947 and 1959, the 12 years before Singapore became a state, Singapore’s GDP grew at an average annual rate of 4.5% in 1968, unchanged from 1968 In terms of price, the average annual growth rate of gross domestic product (GDP) in 1960-60 was merely 9.1%, while that of GDP increased in 20 years
