Myristica fragrans Houtt is an important spice plant. It is dioecious (a very few hermaphrodites), and only female plants can be used as spice plants. Therefore, it is important to identify their gender before the initial flowering. Recently, foreign reports have reported that the leaf extracts of male and female plants of nutmeg are treated with ammonium molybdate. The colors are somewhat different, and their sex can be identified accordingly. But this method is quite troublesome. According to B.K. Neya et al.’s research in the Department of Plants of the University of Calcutta, India, according to the different shapes of the calcium oxalate crystals in the leaf epidermal cells of male and female plants of the nutmeg, the sexes of the seedlings 5-7 years before flowering can be identified.
