1830年,世界目睹了中外文化交流史中一次引人注目的破冰之舉——英國皇家學會會員約翰·大衛斯(John Davis)節譯了《紅樓夢》第三回片段,並以《中國詩詞》(Chinese Poetry)為題,發表在英國皇家學會亞洲學會的會刊上。《紅樓夢》首次以國際通用語言——英語版本的形式走入西方世界。雖然這次僅有部分章節片段的英譯,但西方研究者和閱讀公衆還是依舊享受了接觸這部偉大作品的“眼見為實”的寶貴機會。
In 1830, the world witnessed an eye-catching ice-breaking move in the history of Chinese and foreign cultural exchanges - John Davis, member of the Royal Society, translated the third passage of A Dream of Red Mansions and translated “Chinese Poetry (Chinese Poetry), published in the proceedings of the Asian Society of the Royal Society. For the first time, Dream of Red Mansions entered the western world in the form of an international language - English version. Although only English translations of some of the chapters are available this time, Western researchers and the reading public still enjoy the valuable ”seeing" message of approaching this great work.
