1970年,大学毕业的王能智被分配到京郊密云县焦家坞中学。校长信任他,要他编写密云县地理教材。王能智以为校长在开玩笑,可校长意味深长地说:“当老师不是照本宣科,而应该考虑教给学生什么知识。”王能智跑遍了密云县的山川、河流、田野、森林,体验了山花麦穗的清香、水库的倒影、牛羊的叫声……在跋山涉水之中,王能智突然领悟到:教地理是这么有意思的一件事情!教材出来了,王能智对地理教学也有了一个新的认识:这些与当地生产、生活密切结合的知识为学生所掌握,就能为家乡的建设解决实际问题。
