Some progress has been made in medical research on AIDS, but there are still many problems to be studied further. One of the advances is the possible etiology of AIDS. In April 1984, Robert Gallo at the National Institute of Cancer Research and his team said that they isolated and identified HTLV-III, a retrovirus, (see Issue 1, 1985, Issue 1-3, Reported) may be the main cause of AIDS. They reported finding and isolating in 86% of AIDS-afflicted patients and 18% of AIDS-infected patients with opportunistic pathogens, as well as in 37% of adolescent AIDS patients and 30% of AIDS patients with Kaposi’s sarcoma Out of this virus. However, only 4% of the clinically normal homosexual donors were found to have this virus. The virus was not detected in the 115 clinically normal heterosexual donors tested. In the meantime, a team from the Pasteur Institute, led by Jean-Claude Chermann in Paris,
