一九七七年,陕西区域地质调查队的科技人员在宁强县毛坝河地区的二叠纪地层中,发现了一种疑为“放射状珊瑚化石”之后,由于一次偶然机会,一些同志观看了湖南摄制的科技电影《石菊花》,重新勾起对这种放射状地质现象的怀疑。经过到湖南浏阳学习考察,于一九八三年又赴现场检查核实,几经辗转,终于肯定了这一有意义的菊花石矿藏。矿床赋存于二叠系中下部砾状灰岩中的深灰色厚层灰岩内。含矿层较稳定,具有一定规模。经初步观察,平均每平方米面积内,含花1—2朵。一般个体较大。花朵形态随长势和切面的不同,大体有绣球花、蝴蝶花、鸡爪花、蟹爪花等多种。目前还未见铜钱形这一种(图
