This article aims to provide a critical review of the existing empirical studies regarding character learning in Chinese.18 articles selected through a set of criteria were classified into five categories:character density,complexity and frequency;character presentation;implicit learning;naming,knowing and writing characters;and character learning strategies.The author discusses the methodology and the findings of these studies and also discusses their implications for teaching and learning Chinese characters as well as for future research projects.
