Spent fuel for the Swedish nuclear power plant will be disposed of in a 500m deep bedrock system. The Swedish government accepted in principle in 1984 the disposal program KBS-3, which basically conceived of containing spent fuel in multiple barriers and using these barriers to isolate spent fuel from the environment for a long time. The spent fuel assembly was housed in a steel lined cylindrical copper canister prior to placement in the deep repository. Some special disposal holes were excavated on the floor of the disposal tunnel for placement of the waste tank, with compacted bentonite placed around each waste tank. Deep repository will be built in stages. The first phase of the repository is expected to be completed in 2008, with a capacity of about 5% to 10% of the total spent fuel. After all the spent fuel has been placed, all the aisles of the repository will be backfilled with bentonite and sand and closed.
