The semiconductor industry is the foundation of the electronics industry, basically 10 years for a generation. In the 1950s, the era of transistors (Tr), the 1960s for the integrated circuit (IC) era, the seventies for the large scale integrated circuit (LSI) era, the 80s for the VLSI era. The nineties for the ultra-large-scale integrated circuit (ULSI) era. Japan’s MITI’s Mid-term Outlook for the Electronics Industry Roundtable Report Predictions: In 1995, the world’s semiconductor demand was 14.68 trillion yen, of which IC was 12.9 trillion yen, accounting for 87.9%; in 2000, the demand was 27.77 trillion yen, of which IC was 25.4 trillion yen, accounting for 91.5%. This shows that the semiconductor industry in the 1990s will have steady growth and may maintain a 2-digit growth rate. The semiconductor industry in the nineties will still be the protagonist of the IC, IC’s main raw material for silicon.
