石河子垦区属大漠生态、绿州农业,年平均气温6.0～6.6℃,无霜期160～170天,年降水130～295mm,>10℃的有效积温3200～3800℃。土壤为灰漠土,草甸土,潮土等类型。缺磷少氮,含钾较丰富。质地较粘重,肥力较低,有机质平均为1.14％。水源主要依赖冰川融化水和积雪补给,泾流量分布极不均衡,往往造成春季缺水干旱,尤其6～9月供水相当紧张。30多年来,石河子地区甜菜种植面积虽不断扩大。却存在单产不高、总产不稳的现象,含糖由原来18.02度下降到16.19度。
