When Zhang Zhidong became Governor General of Huguang in 1887, Hubei Province began to study American cotton-growing technology and introduced cotton varieties of upland cotton from the United States to be distributed to farmers in Jingzhou, Yichang, Huanggang, Xiaogan, Xianning and Xiangyang for free distribution. The high-yielding and high-quality upland cotton basically replaced the low-yielding inferior cotton and cotton in Hubei for more than 1,700 years since the 2nd century. However, due to the shackles of the small-scale peasant economy and the habit of farmers in the cotton area who are accustomed to self-textile self-sustaining needs, it has been planted for nearly 50 years. During the First World War, Shanghai’s Shenxin and Wuhan Cotton Confederations, which paid a high price for the acquisition of upland cotton, paved the way for the universal popularization and promotion of upland cotton.
