In the first half of 1989 (January-June), Japan’s steel production amounted to 53.62 million tons, an increase of 2.1% over the same period of 1988, setting the highest level in six months for the past nine years. Based on this calculation, Japan’s annual steel output in 1989 will reach 107.0 million tons. Due to the increase in domestic demand, the output of electric furnace steel in Japan reached 16.6 million tons in the first half of 1989, setting the highest record in history. In terms of steel, the output of almost all varieties such as H-beams, small bars, wide strips and slabs exceeded that of the same period in 1988, with only the output of large section bars, high-carbon steel wires and hot-rolled steel pipes being lower than the same period of 1988. In addition, blast furnace pig iron production was 39.516 million tons.
