ON January 19,2003,at around 4:00 pm,afew rural laborers were digging at the edge of their village in western China’s Shaanxi Province. Minnies later they inadvertentlyunearthed a cellar containing 27 priceless bron/e vessels dating back 3,000 years.Shaanxi Province is home to numerous historical relics, most famously the Qin Dynasty (221-207 B.C.) Emperor Qinshihuang’s terracotta warriors. A discovery of this kind is a familiar phenomenon to these villagers, as three cellars containing bronze vessels and a set of bron/e chimes had previously been unearthed in their village.
