李提摩太的《天国之行》是第一部《西游记》英译本。其以清代《西游证道书》为翻译底本,同时参照了清代《新说西游记》和明百回本。李提摩太认为,《西游记》虽然是佛教内容的小说,实际阐发的却是基督教精神。他将以佛教阐释基督教的佛教经典翻译方法移之于《西游记》文本的翻译、改造和重新诠释,将基督教精神渗透《天国之行》。这种援耶入佛的策略,使《西游记》的翻译传播带上了浓厚的宗教色彩。
Timothy’s Trip to Heaven is the first English translation of Journey to the West. Based on the translation of “Journey to the West” in the Qing Dynasty, it also refers to the “New Journey to the West” and Minghui Huibian in the Qing Dynasty. Li Timothy thinks that while Journey to the West is a novel of Buddhist content, the actual interpretation is the Christian spirit. He will use Buddhism to explain the Christian Buddhist classic translation methods to “Journey to the West” text translation, transformation and reinterpretation of Christian spirit through the “trip to heaven.” This strategy of helping God enter Buddhism has brought a strong religious tone to the translation and transmission of Journey to the West.
