Previous studies have shown that during nighttime flights, visual function may decrease at altitudes above 12,000 ft (3657.6 m) without oxygen supplementation. The use of medications that benefit the potential visual acuity, such as increasing dark adaptation and promoting night vision, makes sense from night-time flights. Preliminary studies have shown that under low light conditions, cyanidin derivatives affect the retina by increasing dark adaptation of the retina and macular sensitivity. The purpose of this work was to evaluate the effect of procyanidin extracted from the bilberry millet in the hypoxic and simulated nighttime conditions. Methods Two groups of pilots were studied, all of them had a visual acuity of 20/20 with no visual defects. One group (study group) was treated for 15 days with 200 mg every 12 hours; the other group (placebo) was treated with double-blind crossover.
