Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is one of the most serious microvascular complications of diabetes and is the leading cause of blindness in diabetic patients. The main pathophysiological changes are neovascularization and blood-retinal barrier destruction. VEGF has the function of increasing vascular permeability and stimulating neovascularization and plays an important role in the development of DR. The latest discovery of EPO and proliferative diabetic retinopathy are closely related, and this relationship has nothing to do with VEGF. This article gives a brief overview of the role of VEGF and EPO in diabetic retinopathy.
