小高炉对焦炭的粒度要求是15—80毫米。一般入库的焦炭块度常在200毫米以上,故入炉前都必需经过破碎手续,破碎焦炭通常用人工,破碎一吨焦炭需要一个全劳动力,劳动强度很大,而且块度个均匀。粉碎率大(焦炭强度好的粉碎率有12%,强度差的粉碎达到20%)。湖南新邵铁厂和邵阳市铁厂先后自制了一种简易碎焦机,用动力破碎代替人工锤碎,取得了很好的效果。新邵铁厂的碎焦机每小时可以碎焦9吨。(每昼夜为216吨)不但块度均匀,而且粉碎率只有3%,三班只需24个工人操作,碎焦一吨只合人工0.11个,
