The smoker’s serum ascorbate levels are reduced and the risk of vitamin C deficiency is increased, which can only partly be explained by their lower vitamin C intake. The National Council for Science’s Committee on Food and Nutrition recently increased the recommended dietary vitamin C (RDA) intake for smokers from 60 to 100 mg, but it is not yet certain whether 100 mg is actually the most appropriate level of intake. To better understand exactly how much asbestos is needed for smokers, Wisconsin researchers from the second full year 1976-1980
