1938年,正值中华民族奋起抗战的烽火年代,周恩来和郭沫若以及阳翰笙、田汉等一批文化界进步人士,将大批爱国青年组织起来,以国民政府军事委员会政治部的名义,组成10个抗敌演剧队。这是我党在国统区开展抗日民族统一战线斗争的一支重要的革命文艺队伍。8年抗战中,这些演剧队转战南北,深入敌后和战区,以战场为舞台,以蓝天当幕布,表演了一场场一幕幕鼓舞民族士气和斗志的威武雄壮的史剧。
