土地革命战争时期。长汀是中央苏区的重要组成部分,是闽粤赣边界的物资集散重镇,被誉为“红色小上海”。长汀还是中央红军长征出发地之一。长征前夕驻扎在长汀的中央红军有红一军团、红九军团和红二十四师等两万多人。松毛岭保卫战前,因江西兴国告急,红一军团奉命回师增援,红九军团和红二十四师在地方武装配合下．与国民党军在长汀松毛岭展开了七天七夜的激烈战斗。1934年9月28日,红九军团奉中革军委命令撤出松毛岭战斗。到钟屋村集结待命。30日上午,红九军团在钟屋村“观寿公”祠堂门前大草坪上召开全村群众大会。下午3时,红九军团兵分两路从钟屋村出发．经河田前往汀州城。钟屋村赤卫模范连、少先队也跟着部队一起转移,后来全部加入红九军团参加长征。10月3日,红九军团两路汇合到达汀州城后,在汀城休整了4天。6日傍晚,全军从汀州城西移,经瑞金、会昌,于10月16日下午4时许从珠兰埠出发,从此离开了中央苏区根据地。红二十四师则奉中革军委命令留守中央苏区,并担任东线阻击任务。
