Objective To investigate the relationship between the count of circulating tumor cells (CTCs) and the clinical features, stages and tumor markers in gastric cancer. Methods Eighty patients with gastric cancer, 50 patients with chronic gastritis and 50 healthy volunteers were enrolled in this study. 7.5ml of peripheral blood was collected before treatment, and the number of CTCs in venous blood was counted by Cell Search method. The correlations were analyzed with the gender, age, clinical stage and tumor marker Relationships. Results The CTC count of gastric cancer patients was significantly higher than that of chronic gastritis patients and healthy people (P <0.01). The number of CTCs in peripheral blood of patients with gastric cancer was not significantly correlated with the gender and age of patients (P> 0.05) But increased (P <0.05). CTC count in peripheral blood had no significant correlation with CEA and CA199 levels (P> 0.05), but positively correlated with serum CA724 level (P <0.05). Conclusion The CTC count in peripheral blood of gastric cancer has some correlation with the clinical features of patients, which can reflect the disease status initially and is expected to become a new hematological index for early diagnosis of gastric cancer.
