《新青年》作为一本杂志在中国从传统社会向新社会的转型过程产生了重要作用。围绕《新青年》而展开的书籍设计不但充分表达了杂志本身的精神,而且探索和进行了所谓“现代的”平面设计在方法、形式、美学观和理念上的表达,中国平面设计的现代意识也从《新青年》等一系列具有明显新文化倾向和现代精神意识的公共媒介中传播和发展出来,这也突出地显示了中国平面设计的现代方式从一开始就产生于中国文化的现代方式之中,并且伴随这种现代化的展开而形成利于自身发展的现代系统。
