孙武的军事思想和军事理论的形成,深受齐国创始人、大军事谋略家吕尚与齐国名相管仲的影响。 综观吕尚的军事政治生涯和兵学要著《六韬》(《六韬》一书《隋书·经籍志》载为周吕望著。据1972年山东临沂银雀山西汉前期古墓中出土的《六韬》残简证明,此书在西汉前已广为流传。从现存《六韬》所记的军事思想、战争规模及战术内容看,其中大部分不可能产生于周初。据今人考证,此书完成时间当在战国末期。很可能是依据当前吕尚的军事思想和言论,为后人编撰并不断增益而成)的内容,吕尚的军事思想相当丰富,但最为突出且对孙武及其后人影响最大的是“阴谋修德”和“兵权奇计”两个方面。
