赛马是香港最受欢迎的一种运动,19世纪中叶由居港英国人传入,早期每年只举办一次比赛。1988年一群热爱赛马的英人成立了香港赛马会,促进了赛马活动的发展,比赛逐步增加。随着依附在赛马上的博彩在香港风行起来,赛马更成为香港人生活中不可缺少的部分。如今,赛马已成为香港一大产业。赛马会现有会员1.4万人,有全职雇员4500多人,临时雇员1万多人,拥有固定资产33亿港元。现役马匹平均数为950匹左右,有马主756个(个人、合股、团体三种)。每年举行66—69次赛马。平均每次比赛有4.7万人左右入场投注,约有100万人在场外投注,还有约53万人通过电话投注。平均每次比赛的投注额达8.7亿元。八十年代初期全年的投注额仅10亿元,1982—83年度,投注额达到601.4亿元(其中:场外投注307亿元;电话投注
Horse racing is one of the most popular sports in Hong Kong. It was introduced by Hong Kong residents in the mid-19th century. Only the first race was held each year.
