The U.S.-made (National Additive Manufacturing Innovation Agency) recently announced that it will for the first time upgrade traditional vertical machining equipment for CNC machine tools to enable metal 3D printing using laser-engineered net forming. The project was funded by the United States and led by optomec, which includes MachMotion, TechSolve, Lockheed Martin and the US Army Bennett Laboratories. With a modular design, the project incorporates the latest control systems, trajectory planning systems and quality monitoring systems, enabling any CNC machine to be upgraded with 3D printing capabilities for cost-effective additive production
