从中国工艺美术的发展历史上来看,宁夏地区经历了多民族间的变迁、融合到相互的一个漫长过程。逐步形成了一种有别于其他地区所特有的工艺、民风。从我们现在所延续的工艺来看,其剪纸、泥塑、砖雕、石雕等艺术,似乎能反映出宁夏地区工艺美术的现状,更能窥探出民俗文化的基本特征:一是宁夏地区工艺美术是反映宁夏地区民俗文化、宗教信仰的一个窗口,工艺美术与民俗文化共同产生一个民俗文化层;二是宁夏地区工艺美术的造物思想与习俗文化之间形成的互动与共生的民俗文化现象;三是民俗文化对工艺美术的影响。
