Dude (1840 - 1897) was a famous French novelist in the second half of the 19th century. He was born in a factory family in Niemey, Provence, southern France. He studied at Lyon Middle School. Due to family bankruptcy, students had to leave school to make a living. He served as a primary school teacher and was a private secretary in Paris. Before the outbreak of the Franco-Prussian War in 1870, he was already a well-known writer. The collection of short stories published in 1866, “Music Wenzhou” and the semi-autobiographical novel “Little Things” published in 1868, were his famous works. The former uses the daily life of his hometown as a theme, describing the natural scenery and customs of the south of France in a prose style; the latter reflects the corruption of bourgeois school education and the relationship between capitalist society and people. During the Franco-Prussian War, he was drafted into the army and saw with his own eyes the miserable images of the motherland, inspiring him.
