In some depressions in the Northern Jiangsu Plain, there are thick deposits of Mesozoic and Cenozoic sediments. The sequence of the Lower Tertiary is bottom-up: the Paleocene Taizhou Formation, the Paleocene Uprising Eocene Ningqun (also divided into four sections of one, two, three, four), the Dainan Formation in Lower Oligocene and the Three Duo Formation in the upper part of Oligocene (Table 1). In the past, most of the lower Tertiary strata in northern Jiangsu were all considered as continental sediments (rivers and lakes).
