由于关涉边让的史料甚少,故今难以确知其见袁阆原型故事的究竟,但依据《世说新语.言语》首条所提供的事实与线索,并结合当时的背景、边让的生平事迹及对《世说新语》作综合的考察,尚可推知:边让见袁阆原型故事或当发生在光和元年至三年间,即其年龄约在27—29岁;原型故事的真相则关涉边让一次追求仕进失败的政治人生活动。对原型故事发生时间及真相的探讨,将为研究《世说》“言语”门首条的深层创作动因及其叙事意义,提供重要前提。
