OBJECTIVE: To analyze and comprehensively evaluate the quality of the different collected frankincense medicinal materials. Methods: GC-MS was used to analyze and identify the volatile components in mastic. The HPLC-PDA method was used to analyze the non-volatile components in mastic, and the similarity was evaluated using SPSS 16.0 software Evaluation and principal component analysis. Results: The GC-MS analysis identified 12 volatile components in the volatile oil from Boswellia serrata. Similarity analysis showed that the similarity between the collected Boswellia serrata samples from Guangdong Medicinal Materials Co., Ltd. was similar (similarity coefficient was 0.940); followed by those collected from Yunnan Medicinal Materials Company (P <0.05). The principal components analysis showed that the diterpenoids in volatile components had the most significant influence on the quality of frankincense. Similarity analysis of non-volatile components of frankincense showed that samples collected from Yunnan Medicine Company and Guangdong Medicine Company had the highest similarity (similarity coefficient was 0.972), followed by samples collected from Guangdong Medicine Company and Nanjing Medicine Company with higher similarity (Similarity coefficient was 0.960). The principal component analysis showed that the content of boswellic acid in non-volatile components had the most significant effect on the quality of frankincense. The comprehensive evaluation shows that the quality of Boswellia medicinal materials collected in Guangdong is superior to that collected in other provinces. Conclusion: The results provided a certain basis and references for the quality control evaluation of Frankincense herbs.
